Hotels, Resorts and Homestays on Agatti Island
Staying on Agatti Island
Agatti is where a Lakshadweep trip begins for almost everyone. It holds the archipelago's only airstrip, which makes it the one island you can fly to directly, and it has by far the widest choice of places to stay — from small family-run homestays a few steps from the sand to sea-facing cottages and premium resorts.
The island itself is a narrow strip of coral land roughly six kilometres long and rarely more than a kilometre across. You can walk its length in an afternoon. Around 8,000 people live here, so this is a working island with a harbour, shops, schools and fishing boats — not a resort enclave. For a lot of travellers that is precisely the appeal: you are staying in a community rather than a compound.
The lagoon
Agatti's lagoon runs along the western side of the island and is the main reason people come. It is shallow over long stretches, calm enough in settled weather to go glassy, and clear enough that you can see your own shadow on the sand beneath you. Children can wade a long way out safely. The colour shifts through the day from pale mint to deep turquoise.
Unusually for India, you can snorkel directly from the beach in several places — most coastal destinations require a boat to reach anything worth seeing. Boat-based snorkelling trips reach better sites on the reef proper and cost very little.
Getting to Agatti
Agatti Airport (AGX) now takes direct flights from Kochi, Goa and Bangalore. This is a meaningful change from the years when everything routed through Kochi with an overnight stop — a direct service saves a full travel day at each end. The alternative is a passenger ship from Kochi, which takes 14 to 20 hours and costs a fraction of the airfare.
Every visitor needs an entry permit, including children. The process is far lighter than most guides suggest: no police clearance certificate, no sponsor, and no tickets required at application stage. An ID card and a photograph for each passenger is the whole document list. Guests booking a package with us have the permit handled as part of the booking.
Choosing where to stay on Agatti
Two things are worth thinking about. First, which side of the island: lagoon-side gives you calm, wadeable water and sunsets, while the eastern shore faces open sea, catches the sunrise and gets more wind. Both are good — they are simply different.
Second, whether you want air conditioning. From December to February the sea breeze does most of the work on its own. In April and May, when the islands get genuinely hot, AC is worth paying for.
Almost all Agatti accommodation includes meals, usually all three. This is not an upsell — there are very few independent restaurants on the island, so properties cook for their guests as a matter of course. It also means a room rate here is not comparable to a room-only rate on the mainland.
When to come
The season runs October to May. December to March gives the most comfortable weather and the calmest seas; April and May are hot on land but bring the year's clearest underwater visibility, which is why divers often prefer them. October and November offer close to peak conditions at lower rates. The southwest monsoon between June and September effectively closes the island — ships are suspended, water sports stop and flights are frequently disrupted.
What there is to do — and what there isn't
Snorkelling, diving, kayaking, glass-bottom boat trips, and day excursions to Bangaram and Thinnakara. Walking the island end to end. Sitting in the lagoon. That is broadly the list, and most visitors find four or five nights is the right length.
There is no nightlife and no bars — alcohol is prohibited on the inhabited islands. There is very little shopping. If that sounds restful, Agatti will suit you; if it sounds limiting, it is better to know now. One practical note: any island you plan to visit, including a day trip, must be named on your entry permit at the time of application. Looking at the lower end of the range?
