Air conditioning matters more in Lakshadweep at some times of year than others, and it is worth understanding the difference before you book.

From December to February the islands are at their most comfortable — warm days, a constant sea breeze, and nights that are genuinely pleasant without cooling. Many visitors in these months find they barely use the air conditioning they paid for.

From March onwards it becomes a different proposition. April and May are hot and humid, with temperatures climbing into the mid-thirties and the middle of the day becoming something you plan around rather than through. In those months an air-conditioned room is not a luxury; it is what makes the afternoons usable. If you are visiting to dive — and April and May bring the year's clearest underwater visibility — AC is worth prioritising.

What an AC room stay looks like

Most air-conditioned accommodation in Lakshadweep is in homestays and guesthouses rather than hotels in the mainland sense. Properties are typically family-run, with a handful of rooms, and rates almost always include meals since there are very few independent restaurants on the islands.

Expect comfortable and clean rather than luxurious. Hot water, a fan alongside the AC, and often a fridge or kettle are common. Power supply is generally reliable, though brief interruptions do happen.

Choosing well

Air-conditioned rooms are found across Agatti, Kavaratti and Bangaram. Agatti has the widest choice and the easiest access, with direct flights now operating from Kochi, Goa and Bangalore.

If you plan to spend most of the day out on the water, a comfortable air-conditioned room to return to may matter more to you than being directly on the sand — in which case an AC room slightly inland can be better value than a beachfront property.

Remember that every traveller including children needs an entry permit. The requirements are now minimal: an ID card and a photograph for each passenger, with no police clearance certificate, no sponsor and no tickets needed at application stage.
