As at most Lakshadweep properties, meals are included. With almost no restaurants on the island, this is how eating works rather than an upsell. All three meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner — are included in the rate. Food here means same-day fish, coconut and rice, with vegetables arriving by boat from the mainland. Flag any dietary requirement at the time of booking — kitchens are small and cannot source ingredients at short notice.

Where it is

Pearl Horizon Home Stay Agatti is at Center Road, just behind SAS Agency, near Al Amana Shop, Agatti Island. Agatti is where most Lakshadweep trips begin. It holds the archipelago’s only airport, so it is the one island you can fly to directly, and it has the widest choice of places to stay.

The lagoon runs along the western side of the island and is shallow enough to wade far out in calm weather. Snorkelling straight from the beach is possible in several places, and boat trips to Bangaram and Thinnakara are arranged locally — though every island you visit must be named on your entry permit.

Getting to Pearl Horizon Home Stay Agatti

Direct flights land at Agatti from Kochi, Goa and Bangalore. Nothing on the island is far from the airstrip, so arrival is straightforward once you are down.

Lakshadweep requires an entry permit from every visitor, children and infants included. Much of what is written online about this is out of date — there is no longer any police clearance certificate, sponsorship or ticket requirement. An ID card and a photograph for each passenger is all that is asked. Permits are handled for guests booking through us.

Who this suits

At ₹4,000 a night this is one of the more affordable stays on Agatti, and it suits travellers who would rather spend their budget on getting to Lakshadweep than on the room. It is a room-based stay rather than a beachfront cottage, so it works well for travellers who plan to be out on the water most of the day and want somewhere comfortable to return to. Children are well catered for, and the shallow lagoons make Lakshadweep an unusually easy destination for young families.

Good to know

• Alcohol is prohibited on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep.
• Dress modestly away from the beach; these are conservative island communities.
• Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Ordinary sunscreen damages the coral that makes this destination what it is.
• Come between December and March for the weather, or in April and May if diving is the priority.
• Bring cash for the whole trip. ATM coverage is thin and not every place takes cards.
