What you get at this price
At the ₹4,000–₹5,000 level you can generally expect an air-conditioned room with an attached bathroom, running hot water, and meals included. Wi-Fi is common but slow by mainland standards — BSNL has the most consistent coverage on the islands. Most of these properties have between three and six rooms, so the atmosphere is closer to staying in someone’s home than in a hotel.
What you generally do not get is direct beachfront position, a swimming pool, room service, or a choice of restaurants. If being able to step from your room onto the sand matters to you, look at beachside stays instead, where rates start higher.
Where the budget options are
Most inexpensive accommodation is on Agatti, which has both the airstrip and the largest concentration of small family-run properties. Kavaratti has a smaller number at similar rates. Bangaram has no budget accommodation — it is a single uninhabited resort island and rates there start several times higher.
Keeping the total cost down
- The flight is the expensive part, not the room. Agatti has a limited number of seats and fares rise steeply as they fill, so booking early saves more than choosing a cheaper property.
- Check what meals are included. A room at ₹4,000 with three meals is cheaper in practice than one at ₹3,500 without.
- Consider October, November or May. Rates ease outside the December-to-March peak and conditions are still good.
- Air conditioning matters less in winter. From December to February the sea breeze does most of the work.
