There are 45 rooms at Cocoon, with capacity for 90 guests in total. The property has 45 bedrooms and 45 bathrooms. Rooms are air-conditioned. That is worth having in April and May, when the heat builds; in the cooler months you may find you barely use it. Hot water is available. Rooms have a television. There is a fridge for guest use.

Meals and what is included

Rates at Cocoon include meals, which is the normal arrangement across Lakshadweep — there are very few independent restaurants, so properties cook for their guests. Included here: breakfast. Expect fresh fish — tuna in particular — alongside rice, coconut and vegetables brought in by boat. Where it is

Cocoon is at Bangaram Island. Bangaram is uninhabited apart from its resort operation, which makes it the most secluded stay available in Lakshadweep. The property is beachfront, so the water is directly in front of you rather than a walk away — on islands this small that is less about convenience than about how the days actually feel.

Bangaram and neighbouring Thinnakara are also the two islands where foreign nationals may stay, on a special permit. Alcohol has historically been permitted on Bangaram, unlike the inhabited islands.

Getting to Cocoon

You reach Bangaram by flying to Agatti — direct from Kochi, Goa or Bangalore — then taking a boat transfer of roughly an hour to ninety minutes. Transfers run in daylight only and depend on sea conditions, so a delayed flight can mean a night on Agatti.

You will need an entry permit before you travel, and so will every member of your party regardless of age. The requirements are now minimal: an ID card and a photograph for each passenger, with no police clearance, no sponsor and no tickets needed at application stage. If you book a package with us, the permit is arranged for you.

Who this suits

At ₹25,000 a night this is one of the more premium options on Bangaram. The accommodation is cottage-style rather than hotel rooms, which suits couples and families who want a little separation from other guests. With capacity for 90, it also works for larger groups and families travelling together. Children are well catered for, and the shallow lagoons make Lakshadweep an unusually easy destination for young families.

• Alcohol has historically been permitted on Bangaram, unlike the inhabited islands.
• Pack reef-safe sunscreen — standard formulations bleach coral, and the reef is the reason to come.
