The rooms

The property offers 8 rooms and accommodates up to 16 people. The property has 8 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. All rooms are air-conditioned, which matters most in April and May when the islands get genuinely hot; from December to February the sea breeze does much of the work on its own. Rooms have a television.

Meals and what is included

As at most Lakshadweep properties, meals are included. With almost no restaurants on the island, this is how eating works rather than an upsell. All three meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner — are included in the rate. Meals lean on tuna, coconut and rice, and the fish is genuinely fresh. Let us know in advance about vegetarian, vegan or allergy requirements, since everything beyond fish and coconut has to come in by boat.

Where it is

Bangaram AC Cottage is at Bangaram Island. Bangaram is an uninhabited island — no village, no shops, no local population — set within one of the largest lagoon systems in the archipelago. The property is beachfront, so the water is directly in front of you rather than a walk away — on islands this small that is less about convenience than about how the days actually feel.

Bangaram and neighbouring Thinnakara are also the two islands where foreign nationals may stay, on a special permit. Alcohol has historically been permitted on Bangaram, unlike the inhabited islands.

Getting to Bangaram AC Cottage

You reach Bangaram by flying to Agatti — direct from Kochi, Goa or Bangalore — then taking a boat transfer of roughly an hour to ninety minutes. Transfers run in daylight only and depend on sea conditions, so a delayed flight can mean a night on Agatti.

Lakshadweep requires an entry permit from every visitor, children and infants included. Much of what is written online about this is out of date — there is no longer any police clearance certificate, sponsorship or ticket requirement. An ID card and a photograph for each passenger is all that is asked. Permits are handled for guests booking through us.

Who this suits

At ₹18,000 a night this is one of the more premium options on Bangaram. The accommodation is cottage-style rather than hotel rooms, which suits couples and families who want a little separation from other guests. With capacity for 16, it also works for larger groups and families travelling together. Children are well catered for, and the shallow lagoons make Lakshadweep an unusually easy destination for young families.

• Away from the beach, cover shoulders and knees — you are walking through a village where people live.
• Bring cash for the whole trip. ATM coverage is thin and not every place takes cards.
• Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Ordinary sunscreen damages the coral that makes this destination what it is.
