Where it is

Coral Garden Cottages Agatti, Lakshadweep is at Agatti, Lakshadweep. Agatti is a narrow strip of coral land about six kilometres long, wrapped in one of the clearest lagoons in India, and it is the only island in Lakshadweep with an airstrip. The property is beachfront, so the water is directly in front of you rather than a walk away — on islands this small that is less about convenience than about how the days actually feel.

The lagoon runs along the western side of the island and is shallow enough to wade far out in calm weather. Snorkelling straight from the beach is possible in several places, and boat trips to Bangaram and Thinnakara are arranged locally — though every island you visit must be named on your entry permit.

Getting to Coral Garden Cottages Agatti, Lakshadweep

Direct flights land at Agatti from Kochi, Goa and Bangalore. Nothing on the island is far from the airstrip, so arrival is straightforward once you are down.

Lakshadweep requires an entry permit from every visitor, children and infants included. Much of what is written online about this is out of date — there is no longer any police clearance certificate, sponsorship or ticket requirement. An ID card and a photograph for each passenger is all that is asked. Permits are handled for guests booking through us.

Who this suits

• Come between December and March for the weather, or in April and May if diving is the priority.
• Modest dress is expected once you leave the sand. It is noticed, and appreciated.
