As at most Lakshadweep properties, meals are included. With almost no restaurants on the island, this is how eating works rather than an upsell. All three meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner — are included in the rate. Meals lean on tuna, coconut and rice, and the fish is genuinely fresh. Let us know in advance about vegetarian, vegan or allergy requirements, since everything beyond fish and coconut has to come in by boat.

Where it is

Chediyar Traditional Cottage, Lakshadweep is at Near Fish Hatchery, Agatti Island. Agatti is where most Lakshadweep trips begin. It holds the archipelago’s only airport, so it is the one island you can fly to directly, and it has the widest choice of places to stay. The property is beachfront, so the water is directly in front of you rather than a walk away — on islands this small that is less about convenience than about how the days actually feel.

The lagoon runs along the western side of the island and is shallow enough to wade far out in calm weather. Snorkelling straight from the beach is possible in several places, and boat trips to Bangaram and Thinnakara are arranged locally — though every island you visit must be named on your entry permit.

Getting to Chediyar Traditional Cottage, Lakshadweep

Agatti Airport now takes direct flights from Kochi, Goa and Bangalore, so you can reach the island without the overnight mainland stopover that used to be unavoidable. The island is small enough that the transfer from the airstrip takes only a few minutes.

You will need an entry permit before you travel, and so will every member of your party regardless of age. The requirements are now minimal: an ID card and a photograph for each passenger, with no police clearance, no sponsor and no tickets needed at application stage. If you book a package with us, the permit is arranged for you.

• Use reef-safe sunscreen only. Oxybenzone and octinoxate harm the coral you have travelled to see.
• December to March gives the most comfortable conditions; April and May bring the clearest water.
• Modest dress is expected once you leave the sand. It is noticed, and appreciated.
• Bring cash for the whole trip. ATM coverage is thin and not every place takes cards.
